What to do if your car breaks down in France

Nowadays most cars are extremely reliable and when regularly serviced, rarely cause a problem. However, breakdowns can occur whether due to a serious mechanical problem or a minor fault. That’s why it is important to know what to do if your car experiences a breakdown in France.

  1. If you are travelling along an AutoRoute move onto the hard shoulder and switch on the car’s hazard warning lights.
  2. Put on your Hi-vis jacket and ensure that all the passengers do the same before you leave the vehicle. It is a legal requirement to carry in your car the appropriate number of jackets.
  3. Place a warning triangle a distance of 30 metres behind your vehicle to warn other drivers – but note you should only do this if it is safe to do so.
  4. All of the passengers should find a place of safety well away from the car whilst you contact the Auto Recovery company. You can do this by phoning the emergency number provided or 112. The company that maintains the AutoRoute are responsible for arranging for a Recovery vehicle.

AXA Assistance’s comprehensive Motor Insurance includes Breakdown cover for you and your family throughout Europe.
