What do you do when someone dies in France?

Coping with the death of a loved one can be a very difficult experience wherever you live. It can become especially challenging if you are not confident speaking French or do not understand what steps need to be taken after someone dies. Fortunately, there is help available… and below you will find out more about the assistance we can offer; 7 days a week.

When a person has died, a doctor will need to issue a medical certificate (certificat médical) if the death takes place at home or in a hospital. The situation involving accidental or violent death is different; in these situations an inquiry will be required and is the responsibility of other authorities.

Once a certificate has been issued, the death will need to be registered and it will be necessary to provide various items of paperwork for identification – both of the deceased and the person registering it. A notaire will need to be notified to manage the inheritance proceedings. For former UK residents, you may also wish to advise the British Consulate although this is not compulsory.

Depending upon the wishes of the deceased, the body may need to be repatriated. And of course preparations for the funeral, whether it is a cremation or a burial, will be required. These are only a few of the main considerations as clearly there will more things to do in the event of a death.

To help families cope with these considerable pressures, we offer a policy called Essen’Ciel which is designed to remove the stress and provide practical, supportive help when people need it most. Policy holders are able to access – 7 days a week, 8am – 8.30pm – assistance and information to organise a cremation or burial; organ donation; handling financial matters; organisations to be advised; legal information regarding inheritance; and much more.

If you would like to discuss – at no obligation – how Essen’Ciel can help you and your family at this difficult time please give us a call.
