Do I need to register my UK vehicle in France?

If you have recently moved to France or have lived here for a while, you will know that there can be many hurdles to overcome and paperwork to complete. Examples include applying for a Carte Vitale to get into the French health system, starting up a new business, opening a French bank account and much more besides.

However, the importance of properly registering your vehicle in France is often overlooked – and with a new centralised national database now in operation, it has never been more crucial.

The new database – called the Fichier des Véhicules Assurés (FVA) – enables the French authorities to quickly and easily find vehicles which are not insured. It is also linked to other systems such as the Vehicle Registration System (SIV) which manages the Cartes Grises and the administration of speeding fines.

This means therefore that if whilst driving you are stopped by a gendarme, they will be able to instantly check whether your vehicle is properly insured and registered.

Ensuring that your motor vehicle is correctly registered – and insured – is therefore more important than ever before.  Drivers who persistently refuse to register their vehicles appropriately in France could be liable to prosecution and have their insurance policy cancelled.

This may seem daunting, but fortunately help is at hand….

If you have a UK registered vehicle we are able to insure you in France. When you contact us, we will ask you for various types of documentation relating to your vehicle and insurance and guide you through the process of applying for French vehicle registration.
