On a hot, sunny day there’s nothing to beat relaxing by the swimming pool with a cooling drink, spending time reading or enjoying the company of family and friends. Sunshine set against a blue sky is the perfect encouragement to take a dip in the crystal clear water, for a leisurely swim or to have fun. If you are lucky enough to have a pool, there are however a few important things you need to know, so we have put together a few tips.
1. Keep your swimming pool regularly maintained. OK – that sounds obvious, but did you know if you neglect pool maintenance this could shorten its lifespan – by up to half – meaning you need to replace it sooner than you’d hoped. At the beginning and end of the season undertake any major work whilst carrying out checks throughout the summer.
2. Use good quality chlorine tablets. Yes, cheaper tablets may be available but can work less effectively, resulting in a pool that is not either fresh or clean. Direct sunlight can dissipate the power of chlorine so it’s wise to check.
3. Safety first. Certain categories of swimming pool need to have security measures in place to comply with French law. These safety features include, for example, security barriers, pool alarms, pool covers or a pool shelter. For full details, consult a specialist pool contractor or an installer. Failure to comply could mean you receive a hefty penalty of 45,000€ … and even more importantly, it could compromise the safety of children and adults using the pool.
4. Water conservation and energy efficiency. Before starting work on a new pool, you could install a below the ground reservoir which will collect rainwater for use during the long summer months. So even if water is scarce, you can continue to benefit from your swimming pool.
We hope you’ve found these tips useful and that you have a safe and enjoyable time in the sun.
