Road traffic accidents can happen unfortunately; and if you are involved in one in France, there are certain steps that you need to take. In January 2017 it was revealed that deaths from road accidents had increased for the third year running, so it’s crucial that we do all that we can to follow the proper procedures. This article covers the key points of what to do should you have a minor incident involving two vehicles; please refer to your insurance policy or talk to us for more detailed information, including the actions you need to follow for more serious accidents.
If you are involved in an accident:
1. Move your car to a safe place.
2. Place your red warning triangle 30m down the road to alert other traffic and put on the vehicle hazard lights.
3. Wear your safety vest (and ask any passengers to do so).
Your insurance policy includes a constat amiable d’accident form which is used to report any accidents. The constat amiable d’accident enables both parties to detail the facts: names, location, witnesses and insurers and can include both text and a drawing to describe the scene. It doesn’t, however, state who was to blame. Take a note of the other vehicle’s registration number and details of any witnesses or police involved. You are required to sign the form and return the form to the insurer within 5 days; but if you do not understand anything, contact the police.
In the event of injury, you also need to contact the police using 112 or 17.
This article covers the key points, please refer to your insurance policy or talk to us for more detailed information: we shall be pleased to help you. Finally, don’t forget to carry your driving licence with you at all times.
